Papa's Fana'pu
On Thursday, June 26th, our family rosaries for Papa ended with a fana'pu, which basically meant we were having a party. Uncle Ga and his friends were up at my Nana's house cooking a steamboat, turkey, chicken, binadu (deer) kelaguen, salmon, and tinala katne (dried beef), while others brought scallop potatoes, red rice, dinner rolls, flour tatiyas, potato salad, 3 kinds of sashimi, spare-ribs, chicken kelaguen, shrimp patties, and my mama's ham. Then, for dessert, there were 4 cheesecakes, 2 trays of potu, chamorro donuts, lemon meringue, custard pie and a fruit platter. YO! I swear, I couldn't even think about a second helping or sampling all the desserts since I've been eating so much friggin' food since I got back 2 weeks ago.
Now, setting up for a party is usually pretty easy compared to the cleanup. And, seeing as 5 grandchildren went back to the states, there only 5 of us left to do the dirty work, literally. Picking up the trash, cleaning the dishes, folding up chairs, and putting away tables went by pretty quickly that night. However, the absolute hardest and, by far, the most painful, task was left for the next day-cleaning out the ovens! Robbie and I scrubbed, scrubbed, and scrubbed while we were dripping and dripping with sweat and inhaling lots of "simple green" toxins for almost 2 hours nonstop! Lordy, our arms were still burning an hour later when we got home. I love my family, but it is GOOD to be done!
